China Town is in Tangra, which is a neighborhood in the eastern part of the city of Kolkata. The locality was once home to 22,000 ethnic Chinese Indian nationals, now the population has dropped to approximately 2,200. The traditional profession of the Chinese Indian community in Kolkata had been working in the nearby tanning industry as well as in Chinese restaurants. The area is still noted for the Chinese restaurants where many people gather to taste traditional Chinese and Indian Chinese cuisine.
During the time of Warren Hastings, the first governor-general of British India, a businessman by the name of Tong Achi established a sugar mill, at Achipur, 35 kilometers from Calcutta, on the bank of the Hooghly River near the town of Budge Budge. A temple and the grave of Tong Achi still remain and are visited by many Chinese Indians, who arrive from the city to celebrate Chinese New Year.
Tangra is now the most popular destination for Chinese food. Chinese food sold in Tangra restaurants is now known all over the world as “Hakka Style Chinese food”. The once prosperous Calcutta Chinese community is now clearly in decline. However, a bang in Tangra’s exclusive Indian-Chinese food is attracting a lot of attention these days.
The ambiance of Restaurant Fung Fa
Fung Fa has a big area for stags and a small section on the left for family dining. The ambiance is minimal and might appear to be shabby to certain guests used to fine dining. The stag area has a tv which usually airs live sports. The decor is dark and old you can see the owner of the family sitting on the cash counter. You can smoke in the stag area also.
Food of Restaurant Fung Fa
We have ordered 2 portions veg noodles, 1 chilly mushroom, 1 chicken Manchurian with mineral water which was very authentic and good in taste. Our ordered foods are very palatable for stomach and the quantity was also good as two plates can be shared with 3 persons comfortably. The quantity served is quite impressive for the price point of view also. Total they have charged Rs. 800. Alcohol is available in the bottle and again priced very reasonably (in fact cheaper than other restaurants nearby). Although we have not taken alcohol, we visited there in the afternoon to have our lunch.
Service of Restaurant Fung Fa
The service is good. The staff is polite and happy to suggest for the dish. Staff and Gatekeeper behave in such a way that their expectation for a tip was oozing out. Overall service is good, prompt and will keep us well satisfied.
