Himachal Pradesh in North India is one of the most beautiful places in the country. The state is known for its fruit orchards and soaring mountains in the background. Owing to its topography Himachal Pradesh is peppered with hill stations such as Kullu, Dharmasala, Chamba, Manali, and Shimla attracting tourists from all over the world. Obviously, such a beautiful place is ripe for exploitation, especially by the Indian film industry. Often, Himachal Pradesh becomes an important point for shooting climax scenes or more important elements of the plot or simply a dance sequence. Here, in this post, I have picked up few Indian Movies Shot in Himachal Pradesh. This is the first part of the post.

Roja (Eng-Rose) is a 1992 Indian Tamil-language romantic thriller movie written and directed by Mani Ratnam. It stars Arvind Swami and Madhoo in the main roles. The story goes like this, a simple girl from a village in Tamil Nadu, making desperate efforts to find her husband, Rishikumar after he is kidnapped by terrorists during a secret undercover mission in Jammu and Kashmir. The film was dubbed and released in Hindi, Marathi, Malayalam, and Telugu languages. Ratnam had planned to shoot Roja in Kashmir, but extreme terrorism there forced him to shoot the film in other hill stations resembling it. Shooting locations included Coonoor, Ooty, and Manali.
The song ‘Yeh Haseen Vadiyaan’ was shot primarily around the town of Manali, Himachal Pradesh. The majestic Pir Panjal range that towers over the Kullu valley are clearly visible in the song.
2. Jab We Met
Jab We Met (Eng- When We Met) is a 2007 Indian romantic comedy film written and directed by Imtiaz Ali. The film casts Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor in their fourth film along with Dara Singh, Pavan Malhotra, and Saumya Tandon in supporting roles.
Primarily based in Mumbai, Bathinda, and Shimla, Jab We Met tells the story of a feisty Punjabi girl, Geet Dhillon, who is sent off track when she bumps into a depressed Mumbai businessman, Aditya Kashyap, on an overnight train to Delhi.
The film fetched several awards, among which was a National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer awarded to Shreya Ghoshal for the song Yeh Ishq Haaye, which remained a chartbuster for many weeks. The film was shot in Chandigarh and later headed to Shimla and Manali, where the crew filmed a song on the Himalayas and the Rohtang Pass. To watch it online click here.
3. Bang Bang
Bang Bang is a 2014 Indian Hindi-language action drama film directed by Siddharth Anand, based on the screenplay by Sujoy Ghosh and Suresh Nair. Starring Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, and Danny Denzongpa. The shooting was done in Shimla, Manali, Mumbai, Abu Dhabi, Delhi, and Prague. 4. Anbe Vaa
Anbe Vaa (Eng- Come, My Love) may be a 1966 Indian Tamil-language romantic comedy movie written and directed by A. C. Tirulokchandar. The film stars M. G. Ramachandran and B. Saroja Devi. Based on the American film Come September, an upscale industrialist goes on vacation to his bungalow in Shimla, only to get that his caretaker and his wife have left for Kasi after renting the bungalow to a family. The shooting happened in Shimla, Ooty, and at the Hill station of Kufri. The film was also a commercial success. Although the story is place in Shimla, most of the film was shot in Ooty. Shooting in Shimla took place for only 5 days. The song “Pudhiya Vaanam” was shot at Kufri, located 13 kilometers from Shimla, as well as at Mall Road, Shimla. To watch online click here.
Barsaat (Eng- Rain) is a 1995 Indian Hindi romantic action film, which was the debut of Bobby Deol (son of veteran actor Dharmendra) and Twinkle Khanna (daughter of late actor Rajesh Khanna). The film was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. A few scenes were shot at Rohtang Pass near Manali, Himachal Pradesh. Khanna fainted once while filming there. 6. Young Malang
Young Malang may be a 2013 Punjabi language Indian romantic comedy film, directed by Rajdeep Singh. The film stars Yuvraj Hans, Neetu Singh, Vinaypal Buttar, Anita Kailey, Balli Riar, and Anjana Sukhani. The primary locations of the shooting were in Chandigarh, Zirakpur, Kasauli, with some shooting taking place in Italy.
Black is a 2005 Indian Hindi film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and starring Rani Mukerji and Amitabh Bachchan. Black revolves around a deaf-blind girl, and her relationship together with her teacher who himself later develops Alzheimer’s disease. The film draws inspiration from the life of Helen Keller. The film was shot in Mumbai and in Shimla. During the outdoor shoot in Shimla, the script required snow but there was none so the crew brought in snowmaking machines from Mumbai and created a man-made snowy landscape.
Vallarasu (Eng- Superpower) is a 2000 Tamil-language action film directed by N. Maharajan in his film debut. The film stars Vijayakanth and Devayani in the main roles. Desamuduru (Eng- Smart boy) is a 2007 Indian Telugu-language action film directed by Puri Jagannadh. The film stars Allu Arjun and Hansika Motwani, while Pradeep Rawat and Ali play supporting roles. The film was dubbed Ek Jwalamukhi in Hindi and Hero in the Malayalam language. Filming at Hyderabad where the film’s first schedule was shot. The next schedule began in Himachal Pradesh.
