All about Indian Railway concession

Many Indian passengers are not aware of several concessions available in Indian Railways. In maximum cases we know about handicapped concession, senior citizen concession, student concession etc. But apart from all these concessions there are many concessions either we know superficially or we do not know. In an earlier post, I have written about various Patient concessions in Indian Railway in details. Today, I am going to discuss other types of largely unknown railway concessions of our country. So, let us start our today’s topic, All about Indian Railway concession.

  1. Orthopedically Handicapped/ Paraplegic persons along with an escort (handicapped person who cannot travel without escort) traveling for any purpose.

Documents Required

However, during journey, the Senior citizens should carry some documentary proof showing their age or date of birth, issued by any Government Institution/Agency/Local Body, like Identity Card, Ration Card, Driving Licence, Passport Educational certificate, certificate from Local Bodies like Panchayat/Corporation.

6. Recipients of Presidents Police Medal for Distinguished Service and Indian Police Award for Meritorious services, after the age of 60 – traveling for any purpose.

60% for women

In all classes and Rajdhani/ Shatabdi/Jan Shatabdi trains also.

Documents Required

Concession tickets are issued on demand made through the option in reservation form. However, they are required to carry some documentary proof showing their age or date of birth and produce if demanded by some Railway Official during the journey.

6. Shram Awardees – Industrial Workers awarded the Prime Minister’s Shram Award for Productivity and Innovation – traveling for any purpose.

Documents Required

Any document issued by any Government Institution/ Agency/Local Body, like Identity Card, Ration Card, Driving Licence, Pass Port, Educational certificate, certificate from Panchayat/Corporation/ Municipality, or any other authentic & recognized document, is acceptable for this purpose.

7. National Awardee Teachers – honoured with National Award by the President of India for exemplary service in the field of education – traveling for any purpose.

50% in 2nd and SL class.

Documents Required

Any document issued by any Government Institution/ Agency/Local Body, like Identity Card, Ration Card, Driving Licence, Pass Port, Educational certificate, certificate from Panchayat/Corporation/ Municipality, or any other authentic & recognised document, is acceptable for this purpose.

8. Either of parents accompanying the Child Recipients of National Bravery Award traveling for any purpose.

50% in 2nd and SL class.

Any document issued by any Government Institution/ Agency/Local Body, like Identity Card, Ration Card, Driving Licence, Pass Port, Educational certificate, certificate from Panchayat/Corporation/ Municipality, or any other authentic & recognised document, is acceptable for this purpose.

9. War Widows – traveling for any purpose.

10. Widows of Policemen and Paramilitary personnel killed in action against Terrorists and Extremists – traveling for any purpose.

12. Widows of defence personnel killed in action against terrorists & extremists – traveling for any purpose

13. Widows of Martyrs of Operation Vijay in Kargil in 1999 traveling for any purpose.

15. Girls up to Graduation and boys up to 12th standard (including students of Madrasa) between home & school (MST)

16. Students of Govt. schools in rural areas – for study tour – once a year.

17. Entrance exam – Girls of Govt. schools in rural areas – for national level for medical, engineering, etc. entrance exam

18. Concession to students appearing in main written examination conducted by UPSC & Central Staff Selection Commissions.

19. Foreign students studying in India – traveling to attend camps/seminars organised by Govt. of India and also visit to places of historical & other importance during vacations.

20. Research scholars up to the age of 35 years – for journeys in connection with research work.

21. Students and non-students participating in Work Camps.

22. Cadets and Marine Engineers apprentices undergoing Navigational/ Engineering training for Mercantile Marine – for travel between home and training ship.

23. Youths attending National Integration Camps of :-

(i) To attend interview for job in Public Sector Organisations (i.e. Central/ State Govt offices, Statutory Bodies, Municipal Corporation, Govt Under-taking, University or Public Sector Body.)

(ii) To attend interviews for jobs in Central & State Govt.

25. Bharat Scouts & Guides – for scouting duty.

Documents Required (from 24 to 26)

A certificate issued by the Central or State Sangeet Natak Acadamy or certificate from Department of Youth Affairs & Sports Ministry of Human Resource Development needs to be provided during the booking process.

26. Kisans and Industrial Labourers – for visit to agricultural/industrial exhibitions.

27. Kisans traveling by Govt. sponsored Special trains.

28. Kisans & Milk Producers – visit to National level Institutes for learning/raining better farming/ dairy

Required documents for unemployed youth and Bharat Scouts

Central or State government job interviews: Student’s concession certificate needs to be furnished at the time of booking. This certificate would be issued by the Head Master, Head Mistress or Principal of the educational institute where the student had undertaken the main written examination. The concession certificate along with a photo copy of admit card for Main written examination needs to be submitted to the Station Manager of your boarding station.

Job interviews in other Public Sector Organizations: This concession is available for unemployed youths under the age of 35 years. During the concession process the candidate needs to provide attested copy of Call Letter from the organization mentioning the date & interview venue. Secondly, a copy of the application form submitted by the candidate to the organization mentioning that the traveling expenses are not being borne by the organization in question. All these documents must be attested by a Gazetted officer of Central or State Government.

Scouting duties of Bharat Scouts and Guides: A certificate from the Scouter or Guider, which needs to be countersigned by the Secretary or Commissioner of the National or State Head quarters or the District Commissioner of State.

29. Delegates for attending Annual Conferences Of:
(i) Bharat Krishak Samaj and
(ii) Sarvodaya Samaj, Wardha.

Required documents for Kishans and Milk producer:

Certificate issued on prescribed Indian railway concession form by Member of Parliament, Member of Legislative Assembly, District Magistrates, Sub Divisional Officer or Block Development Officers.

Required documents supporting your travel intention must be furnished at the point of booking.

Concession will be admissible only for travel parties in excess of 20 in the second class of mail or express trains.

Concession tickets will be issued directly by Station Manager of the nearest station (boarding) after production and verification of documents.

30. Artistes – for performance.

Required documents for artists

A certificate issued by the Central or State Sangeet Natak Acadamy or certificate from Department of Youth Affairs & Sports Ministry of Human Resource Development needs to be provided during the booking process.

This needs to be supported by another certificate from Civil Authorities of the place of performance. The certificate should mention that the performance is exempted from payment of entertainment tax along with an undertaking by the organizers that the performance will have no commercial motive.

Concession for students of National School of Drama will be provided after a certificate on Indian railway concession form is provided from the institution.

31. Film Technicians – Travelling for film production related work

32. Sportsmen participating in:

Required documents for sport persons

The passenger needs to furnish a certificate from Hony. Secretary or Registrar of University, Deputy Secretary (sports) Association of Indian Universities, Hony. Secretaries of All India Sports Associations & their State units, Secretaries of Olympic Association/ State Olympic Committees (whichever may be applicable)

33. Persons taking part in Mountaineering Expeditions organised by IMF

75% in 2nd and SL class
50% in 1st class

34. Press Correspondents accredited to Headquarters of Central & State Governments/Union Territories/ Districts – for press work.
Spouse/Companion/Dependent children (upto 18 yrs)

50% in all classes and in all-inclusive fares of Rajdhani/Shatabdi/Jan Shatabdi trains.
50% concession twice every financial year.

35. Doctors Allopathic – traveling for any purpose.

36. Nurses & Midwives – for leave and duty.

25% in 2nd and SL class

37. Delegates for attending Annual Conferences certain All India bodies of social/cultural/educational importance.

38. Bharat Sewa Dal, Bangalore – for attending camps/meetings/rallies/ trekking programmes.

39. Volunteers of Service Civil International – for social service.

40. Teachers of Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary Schools – for educational tours.

41. Members of St. John Ambulance Brigade and Relief Welfare Ambulance Corps, Calcutta – for ambulance camps/competitions.

42. Izzat MST to persons with monthly income not exceeding 1500/-, working in unorganised sectors – for journeys upto maximum 100 Kms.

In case of residential proof the following may be accepted: Photo Identity Card cum residential proof like Voter Identity Card, Passport, Driving License, Ration Card, Adhaar Card, Bank Pass book from nationalised Bank with Photograph or any other Photo Identity Card cum residential proof issued with photograph by any government authority.
