After reaching gangtok, next morning we got prepared for our trip to Tsomgo Lake Baba Mandir and Nathula in a shared vehicle. A popular and probably the best day tour from Gangtok is a trip to Tsomgo Lake – a glacial lake about 35 kms from Gangtok and at an altitude of about 12,310 ft. The same day trip also covers the fabled Baba Mandir. You can additionally cover Nathula Pass which is further up and about 52 kms from Gangtok and see the Indo Chinese border and the Chumbi valley through which the old Silk Route (i.e. the trade route between India and Tibet) passes. We finished our breakfast at around 9 am and took lunch packets with us.

Ladakh is a vast area of deserted and unhurt hills, valleys, and ice-clad mountains located in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It stands between two great mountain ranges, the Karakoram in the North all the way to the Himalayas in the South. Traveling to Leh-Ladakh in October is not at all a bad idea. Experiencing the sights of an enormous and deserted spread of hills and valleys combined with the exciting experience of lasting the harsh climate is one of its kind adventures. Ladakh is an outstanding tourist destination but the weather there may not be very welcoming to tourists all the time. Since it has an arctic climate, the weather of Ladakh is chilly and unforgiving all year round.

When tourism in Ladakh was not that much only a handful of people would think of reaching Ladakh by flight. Back then, Manali to Leh highway wore the crown of being a major attraction. I personally feel flying to Leh a better option than a road trip to Ladakh. What is acute mountain sickness?
Travelers who travel to high altitudes can sometimes develop acute mountain sickness. Other names for this condition are altitude sickness or high altitude pulmonary edema. It normally occurs at about 8,000 feet, or 2,400 meters, above sea level. Dizziness (unbalanced), nausea(urge to vomit), headaches, and shortness of breath(dyspnea) are a few symptoms of this condition. Most instances of altitude sickness are mild and heal quickly. In rare cases, altitude sickness can become severe and cause complications with the lungs or brain.
