Located in the heart of dense forest of Dooars region is the holiday for nature lover called Ramsai. Ramsai is a picturesque forest village located at a distance of 20 km from Maynaguri in the Jalpaiguri district on the Eastern side of Gorumara National Park.

Gorumara National Park is known for its amazing number of Asiatic one-horned Rhino. Gifted with plenty of flora and fauna, Ramsai has gained its prominence in the field of Dooars Tourism. Tourists are attracted towards this attractive forest village Ramsai for its serene ambiance and scenic beauty.

Kalipur Eco-Village is situated near Kalipur Forest Village at Ramsai. The center is having 4 Non AC Double Bedded huts. The package includes Stay, Fooding, Tribal dance, handicraft items, bullock cart ride and obviously early morning elephant ride. Elephant Joy ride in the forests of Gorumara National Park makes the experience memorable. The eco-tourism center is surrounded by Tea gardens on one side and greenery of forests on other side. One can have a taste of rural life by visiting nearby forest villages. Best time to visit there is from October to February.

The compound was decorated with pond, sitting arrangement with umbrella, spacious lawn with parking area etc. And the styles of the cottages are one and half storied height. We reached there in the early morning around 6 am. They served tea and around 9 am they served breakfast with hot puri, sabji and sweets. In lunch we got rice, dal, fry, sabji, fish curry and chutney. We had tiffin with Tea and Pakoras in the evening and that is also room service. Around 7.30 pm they requested to enjoy tribal dance. We are the only family present there. Tribal girls performed different songs and dances in front of us with dandia, dhol, dhamsa, madol etc. And after a delicious dinner we went back to our room with the warning note not to come out of the cottage at night, as Leopard may come in the compound.

To enjoy the jungle safari on elephant you have to book any one of the three jungle cottages operated by West Bengal Forest Department. They are Gorumara Eco Village Kalipur, Gorumara Elephant Camp Dhupjhora and Gorumara Rhino Camp Ramsai. We stayed at Kalipur Eco village near Medla watch tower in the first week of December. Everything was good except the bull cart ride. After the elephant ride, we were asked to pay 40/-(per head) which somewhat left a bad taste, otherwise it is wonderful experience.

I paid Rs. 5100 for 3 which includes food, stay, Elephant safari,Folk dance & a small gift from local resident.  We stayed at ‘Malsa’ cottage. Clean room with glass window, clean washroom with regular water from overhead tank. Geyser was not available, but every time we asked, we got hot water in buckets from kitchen.

Mosquito net is also provided. One can find lot of insects in the room but that is quite natural in jungle, so better use mosquito net or carry mosquito repellent. It has nothing to do with cleanliness of the room. Jungle starts right from the edge of the rooms. The caretaker said elephants, gaur, rhino often come near the cottage but don’t expect it always. If you are lucky enough then you will see them.

For drinking water they used purifier and I trusted that source of water. If you don’t trust then better carry your own drinking water. Don’t expect any shop nearby. Not only water, if you need anything you need to carry it with you from Ramsai or Maynaguri.

Food quality is good, gives a homely taste. Quantity is enough to fill your stomach. There is no TV in the room. Only in common dining room there is a TV. So evening could be little boring. However you will have the tribal dance and early dinner so not much of time will be left.

The stuff’s behavior is good. They are from the local village. They will certainly be speaking Bengali and Hindi. But I doubt if they can help you out with other language. Mobile network coverage is not great. However you could still be connected with rest of the world. I didn’t face any electric power failure.

How to reach Kalipur Eco Village Camp Ramsai
